History of 90s snacks that you forgot about: Fruit Gushers

Fruit Gushers wasn’t my candy of choice when I was six years old. I just wasn’t a fan of the gushiness and I remember this candy leaving a bad after taste that often made me feel nauseous. I remember the fruit-flavored goo (or juice) that leaked out when the jewel-shaped pod that contained it all leaked out after you pierced the gummy armor with your teeth. What I did enjoy was bursting the pods between my fingers and making a sticky mess. I just never liked how that whole production felt in my mouth.

Despite how I felt about this candy as a child, this product was extremely popular amongst many people, which drove it to be a popular candy in the present time.

Digging Deeper

Fruit Gushers was a fruit snack created by Betty Crocker in 1991 and priced at $2.19. This product came in two flavors: “Strawberry Splash” and “Gushin’ Grape”. Betty Crocker has introduced many flavors since 1991, but recently in 2020, the company released a new variety of flavors in a series named “Galactic Fruit Gushers”. These include: “Asteroid Apple”, “Berry Star Cluster”, and a mystery flavor named “Unidentified Flavored Object”.

Still Going Strong

Fruit Gushers has proven to be a highly successful product for Betty Crocker with almost 30 years of service. The company has made many flavors and refinements to the snack (Removed artificial flavors and colors from all its snacks in 2017) which shows its drive to be innovative to keep this candy alive for years to come!
