String Thing. I vaguely remember slowly pulling apart the sticky red strips that made a design that I sometimes didn’t care to recognize as a child. Now as I’m doing more research, these designs consisted of spaceships, bicycles, and other common things in a child’s imagination. If you spent a lot of time eating candy as a child, you probably remember this fruity snack!
Digging deeper
String Thing was a snack created by Betty Crocker in the early to mid-90s. From reading online, the company created this snack with the idea of encouraging kids to have more fun with food. Of course, it is not the ideal thing to encourage a child to eat. But it became a snack (if you want to call it a snack) which kids, like myself, enjoyed peeling apart and then chew on.
Flavors came in Cherry, Berry Blue, and Strawberry. We speculate that this snack had a short run since it was discontinued in the late 90s, but that time is not exactly clear.
Gone…But not forgotten
After reading comments on Reddit, YouTube, and other various sources, this fruit snack was loved by many. Because of the vast variety of candy that I ate as a child, I never did realize that it had vanished from the shelves. But I must say, it did leave me a vivid memory of my childhood, pulling at each strip on my parent’s kitchen table. Here is the alternative if you must have it once more, but I can’t vouch for the taste: The Fruit Factory Strawberry Fruit Strings – 100g
